Recording dtxpressII with sonar 2

I have a dtxpress II kit that I want to record with sonar to add some drum tracks to a friends recordings. I've hooked up the MIDI in/out to my soundcard and the communication seems to work ok, but I don't get drum sounds when I hit the pads! I found the .ins file in the download section, and imported it into sonar 2. When I select channel 10, I get drum sounds.. but not the ones I want... it's always the same, no matter what kit I select on the dtxpress or in sonar. What am I missing here? Am I wasting my time with the MIDI? Am I better off just to go directly to the line in on my soundcard?
