Amp & Speaker For DTXpress I

Amp & Speaker For DTXpress I

2004-04-28 by Frank & Susan Malinowski

My 15 year old son has had a DTXpress I we picked up about a year ago. He
loves it. He has been taking drum lessons for a couple years. He has been
happy with headphones until now. I also have hooked up small self powered
computer speakers. He now wants to graduate to an external speaker. I am
looking to keep this somewhat affordable. Can I just use a home stereo amp
and speakers for a decent sound? Is there a good candidate amp & speaker
system I should be looking for on eBay or the local paper? While a home
stereo setup would probably be enough to fill the house he does hope to
play with school friends sometime so it would be nice to have some
reasonable growth potential in volume & quality although something
subprofessional is in order.

I tried a lot of different setups and on the recommendation of the members of this list, finally settled on a keyboard amp. After buying and returning three, I kept the Peavey KB2. It is perfect for what you want set at about half volume. Kick drum sounds have no distortion and cymbal sounds are nice and bright. When he wants to jam with friends, there will be plenty of volume. Try one and I think you will end up keeping it also.

I have a Roland KC-500 keyboard amp. 15" speaker and 150 watts. Works great.
Another way you might want to go is a Powered Monitor (15") or a small PA. I
also used to have a 300 watt Tubeworks Bass Head with a Tubeworks 4x10 speaker
cabinet. It had the best punch and most presence of any other combo I tried.
Pricey though.

Hello,
It's nice to hear your support for your son's excellent choice to
pursue drumming! Please check places like Drumbalaya, Riks, Guitar
Center, etc. for the new Yamaha personal drum monitor systems. There
are two models- 50 watt, & 100 watt. The system is comprised of two
small satellite speakers that fit right on the drum rack(brackets
included), and a subwoofer amp that sits on the floor. They were
made specifically for the yamaha e-drums, and should perform nicely
(the 100watt allows outputs for further amplification/PA, etc.) $300-
$600 respectively. Good luck...keep the kid drummin'

Keyboard amps also work well. They cover the high-end cymbals and
snare while also covering the low-end base and floor toms without
problem. They are relitively good priced, not too expensive, and are
easily portable in size and weight without sacrificing sound and
power.
