Magic Box

2004-05-22 by Keith

Hi everyone,

The first "Magic Box" exists and works. I have posted pictures in a
new "Magic Box" folder.

Keith.

Good morning . . . ah, afternoon, Keith. Don't hesitate to post a
detailed description of what the Magic Box can do. Many of the new
members won't automatically realize what's at stake, since they may
not have the terminology, the electronics, and the contingencies down
yet. Also, the casual traffic that visits periodically from other
sites may not have been following the magic box thread.

Nice one!

I like the fact that it sits nicely on top of the module without
looking too out of place. What are the sockets on the front though
and are they only there due to a lack of space at the back?

Hey Guys,
I took a look to the pictures of the group, and they're so precious for the DIYer I am :)
Thanx for sharing this !
Then I looked to this 'magic box' in the gallery, and I really wonder what it is :D
Is it something made to adjust the level of triggers ?
Are there some amps in it ?
I'm so curious about it ;)
I searched thru the messages but unfortunately, didn't find any info about it.
Another question : a Roland 3-zones cymbal need 2 inputs on the module. It seems Yamaha found the way to have 3-zones stuff connected to 1 input only. Do someone know how it works. I thought about something that could do the trick, using the DC properties of piezo, but I'm not sure Yamaha stuff work this way.
My idea would be something like that (applied to a 3-zones ride) :
- Piezo + to tip / - to ground & Switches off = Bow hit
- Piezo - to tip / + to ground (inverting the signal with a circuit controlled by the mswtich on the bell) / Bell switch ON / Edge switch OFF = Bell hit
- Piezo + to tip / - to ground & Bell switch Off / Edge switch ON = Edge hit.
Wiring would then be : Piezo + to Jack tip / Piezo - to Jack Ground / Edge mswitch to Jack Ground+Ring. Bell mswitch connected to an internal inverting circuit.
Btw, OldGuyDrummer, your kit is... so BIG :) Congrats !
Cheers,
PFozz

After I looked attentively to the PCB on your pics, it seems simpler :)
Each membrane switch is connected to a resistor, then the resistors to jack's ring (and the remaining 'wire' of the mswitch connected to ground). Since those resistors are probably different, the module may independentaly know if mswitches are on or off.
For example :
R=+inf (on ring/ground) : S1 is OFF / S2 is OFF.
R=50k : S1 is ON / S2 is OFF.
R=100k : S1 is OFF / S2 is ON.
So much simpler and efficient.
Yamaha hits a point with the 3-zones things on 1 input only ;)
But then, Yamaha cymbals shouldn't be compatable with Roland modules, while the Roland cymbals should be useable with Yamaha brains...
I'll think twice about it, when I'll be rich enough to buy another module ;D (I really don't like the internal sounds in Yam's module, tho)
Cheers,
PFozz
