Paul, 

You can get a camera that will accept a IBM microdrive (1 gigabyte model is about $280) that will store about 800+ images (1 megabyte jpegs) before you have to download.  

I commonly shoot 500 or more shots with my microdrive and it works.  

Just make sure to see if the camera has a slot that accepts Type II Compact Flash cards...and check to make sure the larger capacity CF cards are compatible (software stuff) with the camera.
