Paul,

How cheap is cheap?

For quality...I would buy an Olympus 3030 (or similar model) or Nikon 950 (or similar) or even....the brand spanking new Nikon 2500 for a digicam. The Olys and Nikon 9xx series could be found used. There must be a gazillion Nikon 9xx out there...as the owners upgrade often.

Of course if you want new...the Nikon 2500 is really snazzy looking for a 15 year old.

Check dpreview.com for up to date reviews and comments on all of them.

I might want to buy my 15 yr. old kid a cheap digital camera for screen-size
and print snapshots. Easy connection to PC with USB or other common
  connection would be good.

Any suggestions to a person who has never bothered to look at the cheap
snapshot market would be most welcome.

  Thanks.

  Paul

After a quick review of what is out there, I'm not sure any will be up to
storing a trip worth of images. Am I right? Perhaps she can just carry a
light 35 and I can scan as needed.

On a trip last year, a cousin had to carry a n otepad (portable computer) to
store the images she made on a coolpix 990.
In other words, you're right. :)

Paul,

You can get a camera that will accept a IBM microdrive (1 gigabyte model is about $280) that will store about 800+ images (1 megabyte jpegs) before you have to download.

I commonly shoot 500 or more shots with my microdrive and it works.

Just make sure to see if the camera has a slot that accepts Type II Compact Flash cards...and check to make sure the larger capacity CF cards are compatible (software stuff) with the camera.

Have fun,

Steadman

Paul-

Flash card memory has come way down... a 256mb card now sells for
about $115 and on the 2 megapixel cameras this would let her take
about 500 pics... about 350 on the 3mp cameras.

not sure what price range is cheap, but the one i would advise in the
2mp range is the canon digital elph (very sexy...built like a nice
watch) and in the 3mp range, the nikon 885 (which is good enough that
she will be able to make decent letter size prints).

either of these should run about $350.

Re: [Digital BW] OT -- Cheap digital camera for kid

2002-03-25 by John Brownlow

one of the things about digicams is that you BURN through the images

I have 2x256 Mb cards for my Nikon E5000 and I regularly shoot both of
'em full in a couple of hours. That's about 250-300 exposures at fine
quality, the equivalent of say 7-10 rolls of 35mm film. Since I never
ever come home having exposed less than 6 rolls, and regularly expose 10-
20, you can see the problem.

moreover I *never* delete images in-camera. you just can't tell enough.
they all get dumped onto the HD, then burned to CD, without editing. That
way it's like shooting neg, it's all still there.

I don't think there's anything on the market that is both cheap and
flexible enough to handle a trip's worth of images.

There are numerous $80ish 640x480 cameras out there - fixed focus,
low-res, limited to builtin storage - they're fine for what they are,
but in my opinion really not worth the cash.

Anything that accepts flash storage will run you _minimum_ of $200
plus storage cards - more than I'd want to hand to even the
best-behaved and most-responsible 15-year-old. I think you're better
off giving her a small 35 or APS camera and a bunch of film, and
scanning the best images for her. (Or processing them onto PictureCDs)

Interesting point there Jer.

When I think back on it....my first camera (that I remember) was a Kodak 110 camera....that despite my best attempts, never seemed to produce a decent photo....they never looked as good as my memory of the scenes.

Now when I see a 110 print...I know.

But....what if my parents had only given me that Hassy with 80mm lens back then?

Don't make the camera too cheap, or the kid will lose interest fast. Just like a cheap telescope. Can you imagine how many young careers in science and astronomy must have been waylaid because they could never get an acceptable image with it? Looking through a cheap telescope
would make me lose interest in astronomy fast.

Cheap is relative! I totally agree with John,,, but then again I make
my living with a camera. Any camera intended for a child needs to be
user friendly as opposed to complicated. Instant feedback is one of
the greatest features of digital cameras, and one that helps keep
kids interest going. So I would look for a model that has a good
screen image and is easy to operate. My daughter is 9 years old and
has a Kodak DC280 that fits the bill very nicely. I bought it new on
ebay for $350 Whatever digital camera you buy, get rechargable
batteries! Digital cameras eat batteries at a fast rate.

RE: [Digital BW] OT -- Cheap digital camera for kid

Another possibility is Kodak PhotoCD scans, which I think can be had
for about a dollar per exposure, e.g., three rolls of 36-exposure
Kodak Supra, developed and scanned onto a single CD for about $115,
and shot through any 35 which can be set so that she gets to see the
interaction between shutter speed and aperture. I've tried all three
speeds of Supra in this mode in a Canon Rebel and been disappointed
in the grain in the 800. But you can often get by without a flash,
and I think the 800 prints fine at 5 x 7, maybe even 8 x 10.

Have you seen the Digital Elph?

Boy that is a great toy! Looks like a Minox big brother...reminds me of the old Olympus...but in Stainless Steel (or is it aluminum?). I put my hands on one at the store the other day and wished I had it...it could be suspended on a neck cord and taken skiing with you or put it in a ziploc bag and go windsurfing....it is soooo small. Really high on the Cool factor. Easy to put in a pocket.

Don't pass up the low end Olympus "D" series. I have a D100, 1.3
pic. Everyone cann't believe I get such good prints. I use an Epson
1280 and the 4x6's are great. 5x7 look really good also and the
8x10's pass for real photo shop prints by the avarage Joe. You can
find these for $150-$175. Just be sure to get the good Ni-MH
batteries and charger. I carry extra batteries all the time. Flash
shots eat up power really fast. I'll post a couple of my pics.

> Have you seen the Digital Elph?

My friend had one and she asked me to take a picture of her with it. Now
mind you this is the extent of my digicam use so far (aside from studio
models) but the shutter lag was a huge drag! I suppose this is true for ALL
digicams, but that one little "feature" is enough to keep me from spending
my money on those things.

Is that something one can ever get used too? I've heard of anticipating the
action, but these digicams require psychic abilities...

Check out the new Nikon Coolpix 2500.

It is really small (much smaller than the 990) and looks "cool" in blue and chrome. About 2.1 mega as I recall. And it costs about $370 or about the same as a Canon Rebel 2000.

It has a really tiny buttons and stuff...and looks like it is made for a kid.

It is small and twists. You can find a review at dpreview.com.
