Barry, you won't get blacks like that with any matte paper, except possibly if you varnish the prints. But you *can* get a look *very much* like those prints with a microporous RC coated paper and pigment inks. With my ink set, based on Generations inks, I measure Dmax at 1.75 with my favorite matte papers, including Photo Rag and Wm. Turner. But I measure Dmax > 2.5 with Generations ProPhoto Lustre (or Lyson Professional Photo Satin, which I think is the same stuff for more money). Does this matter? You bet. The difference in shadow detail has to be seen to be appreciated. The lustre prints aren't just better, they're a LOT better. But they're fragile, and feel like plastic, until they're framed and behind glass.
