Barry,

California time here. Still early. My guess at an explanation is that the
ink accumulates during cleaning cycles and during printing when the printer
sprays some ink into the foam to make sure the jets are staying clear. I
usually see the problem when I have been printing a lot of small sheets of
paper and then change to larger sheets, especially heavy papers.

I think prevention is just a matter of some routine maintenance like nozzle
checks and head alignments. When you think of it just wipe out that area of
the printer to keep the build up down.
