I tried building a special shim that would take up the slack on both sides but it was more clumsy than just training myself to mate the thing in the middle by sight. I had a thought that it might be a glue-stick....like library paste in a stick like you can buy at Kinko's. This sounds like it a lot but I couldn't imagine a glue stick giving enough adhesion.
