RE: [Digital BW] Sharpening flatbed scans (was: Is this noise or what? was: Epson3200 - Test results)

2003-03-17 by Alessandro Pardi

I fully agree about the softness you always get from flatbeds, and verified
that my scans from the 3200 can get an unbelievable amount of unsharp mask
before generating the usual artifacts. Was just wondering about the
difference of scanner sharpening + PS sharpening vs. sharpening twice as
much in PS (or sharpening repeatedly).
Scanning Portra400BW 6x7 at 3200 dpi, I've played a bit with unsharp mask
(not too extensively, as my printers is out of order so I'll return to that
in due time), and have found that at 100% magnification I can generally
sharpen up to 200% to 300% with radius 1.0 to 1.4, whereas viewing the
picture so that it's 1:1 with what will be the print size (13x19", which
means about 19% magnification on my monitor), it can take even 400% or 500%
with radius around 1.0.
