  I'm not comparing cars to inkjet printers.  I'm comparing their
  USERS.

  I'm saying the what motivates someone to tinker with vintage sports
  cars is the same thing that motivates someone to like to play around
  with all sorts of different inks, drivers, papers, profiling
  software, RIPS, separate printers for color and black and white,
  etc.   They are both "enthusiast" cultures -  collections of
  (mainly) guys who like the process of tinkering and experimenting
  and using arcane, esoteric language.

  My guess is that if Canon or Epson ever DID come up with a decent
  out-of-the-box b+w printing solution it wouldn't change anything
  that most people here do.   They would still be tinkering with this
  stuff just like ham radio operators, despite telephones and the
  Internet, still like to score QSL's from all continents with a 10W
  QRP rig on 20M with a 3 element Yagi.
