Re: [Digital BW]Epson cartridge MIS black only banding won't go away on epson 1280

2003-05-23 by Alan Zimmerman

Hi Johnny, many thanks for the Cj web site. I have meticulously followed and loaded his workflow. Still banding visible with 15x loupe and clean nozzles. Now a stupid question, I can't find a menu to set the epson 1280 printer dirver for 1440 dpi as he instructs.
I;ve checked the full PS 7 " print menu" and the color settings drop down menu but don't find a place to specify 1440 DPI on the printer.Or the Gray Gray gamma 2.2. Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

  Hello Alan,
It's me again. There is a good site to go to for any information on
  black only printing. http://www.cjcom.net/digiprnarts.htm

This really makes it simple to get a good idea of what an image
looks like before using up the expensive hextone inks. I followed
the information on the website and printed it out for later
reference. This was during the time I used a Canon S750 printer for
printing my images. It was not a good printer for doing that.

Quick outline of black only printing.
  1. Edit>Color settings>check Advanced mode.
  2. Gray>Gray Gamma 2.2
  3. RGB>Preserve Embedded Profiles CMYK>Preserve embedded Profiles
  Gray>Preserve Embedded Profiles
  4. Profile Mismatches Check all these
  5. Conversion Options Engine>Adobe(ACE) Intent>Perceptual check Use
black Point Compensation and Use Dither (8-bit/channel images)
  6. Save this as your default workspace under Adobe Photoshop.
  7. After working up your image in RGB assign it the profile of
grayscale and make it a 16 bit image only for printing Black Only.
  8. Control-P to bring up print menu. Indicate Black ink only to be
used and not color mode. Use 1440 DPI setting and High Speed. I know
others say do not use High Speed, but I have found that if I don't
use it, I get microbanding in the lighter portions of the image.
True, it may create more foam in the cartridge, but I can suck that
and the ink out and refill will less stress than seeing an image go
down the tubes because of the banding issue.

This is a condensed method of doing it, the detailed version is on
Clayton Jones' Black Only Printing website.

The only reason I use hextone inks is the neutral color to the image
rather than the slightly brown natural carbon pigment color.

Hope this gets you started out OK.

workflow for Black only, I seem to have seen a proponent of that on

superior in smooth tonality. However, in the meantime, I have a
print deadline within two days so I will have to find a black only
cart workflow. Any suggestions or links would be most appreciated.
