NT suffers from OS memory leaks and a some point you will either crash or have to reboot. In order to cut cost on a large signal processing we were task to rehost the S/W from Sun's to an Intel platform. One time software cost would very quickly be paid for considering the number of units. In order to maintain compatability (and support upgrades) the kernel siganl processing code was just recomplied. There were no leaks in the applications on the Suns nor the Alpha both running their versions of Unix. About 1000 different people are beating on this code daily and it also runs in real time 24/7 operational systems and is very stable. The S/W engineers could never get it work properly under any Windows verson and the decision was eventualy made to go to Linux. Works fine. The windows memory management still has a ways to go. There was some desire to relook at the Windows environment but the decision was made to simply load the windows emulator on the Linux box if someone just had to run word or excel. That works fine to.
