Re: [Digital BW] What size to you print and matt to?

2003-07-23 by mfaphoto@optonline.net

I have been matting mine and others work for about 35 years. I have come up with a rule of thumb. "Use a mat size two standard sizes larger than the print." Standard sizes are 5X7, 8X10, 11X14, 14X17, 16X20, 20X24, 24X30. So, my answer is to use a 14 X17. However, you may find that an 11X14 is better for framing or intimate locations in your home. Or, you may find that the larger mat of a 16X20 may give you a gallery look that is preferred by designers. It is quite subjective in the end. Personally, I use 16X20 board for my 8X10's as I am a "Fine Art Photographer" and the larger mat isolates the image more from the enviorment. I also, just like the look.

Good luck
Russ Martin.
