If so, I've been thinking of doing the same but haven't resolved the 
chip resetting issue.

It seems to me that one of the main reasons to use the top-off 
method is to be able to leave the cart in the printer while 
refilling and avoid the chance you'll introduce air into the head 
from swapping out the cart. The problem, of course, is how to reset 
the chip. A chip resetter reqires that the cart be pulled from the 
printer. Alternatively, the CIS chips are programmed to 
automatically reset to Full when the power is cycled. Since I shut 
off my printer when not in use, the CIS chip wouldn't work for me. I 
suppose you could use the CIS chip and only turn your printer off/on 
when you top-off, but you would still face the risk of any 
unintended power interruptions. 

That all said, I don't have enough cart-swapping experience with my 
1280. Perhaps it's no big deal to pull the cart, set it on the desk, 
top it off, reset the chip and put it right back in the printer.

BTW -- like Tom, I use the SK168 chip resetter. It's very easy and 
fast. Also, you asked if the chip needs to be reset when a still-
full cart is removed from the printer. I'm not sure exactly what 
you're getting at here, but if you pull a cart and then put it right 
back in, the printer remembers the ink level. I'm not sure what 
happens if you pull a cart, swap it with another and then put the 
original back in at some later date. 

I'm very interested to hear how you resolve this issue for yourself.
