chipped carts

2003-08-24 by Alan Zinn

Hi,

I'm ordering a 1280 - the $100 rebate ends on the 30th. My plan is to
use the top-off re-fill method with after-market carts.

I have some questions: With chipped carts what is the drill for re-
setting the chip when using a CIS?
Does anyone have advice RE chip re-setters v. replacment chips for
refilling?

Does the chip need to be re-set when a still-full cart is removed
from the printer (when swapping inks)?

Thanks,

AZ

Hi AZ,

I have a 1280 and am using MIS Ultratones. I refill my cartridges
and use the SK168 chip restore gizmo (technical term). It's
available from MIS too and is simple to use. Just press it against
the chip and when the light blinks the chip thinks it's full.

You mention a CIS too so I'm not sure if you'll be using the
refillable carts or the CIS. If it's the CIS the carts are
programed so every time you turn your printer on it shows as a full
cart. At least that's the way mine works on my 870. If you have a
huge job you might have to stop and turn the printer off and on but
you'd have to be printing hundreds of images at once. It's never
happened to me. I've had the "No More Carts" version for close to
two years now and love it. It has MIS color dye ink and I've had no
problems what so ever with the set up.

Removing the cart and replacing it with another shouldn't be a
problem as long as the new ink is compatible with what you were
using. The carts have a memory.

Hope I'm right on all this. If not I'll be corrected.

Tom

Hi Alan,

Are you talking about using your elegant top-off solution
demonstrated here ;~)

  http://www.panoramacamera.us/m_topoff.html

If so, I've been thinking of doing the same but haven't resolved the
chip resetting issue.

It seems to me that one of the main reasons to use the top-off
method is to be able to leave the cart in the printer while
refilling and avoid the chance you'll introduce air into the head
from swapping out the cart. The problem, of course, is how to reset
the chip. A chip resetter reqires that the cart be pulled from the
printer. Alternatively, the CIS chips are programmed to
automatically reset to Full when the power is cycled. Since I shut
off my printer when not in use, the CIS chip wouldn't work for me. I
suppose you could use the CIS chip and only turn your printer off/on
when you top-off, but you would still face the risk of any
unintended power interruptions.

That all said, I don't have enough cart-swapping experience with my
1280. Perhaps it's no big deal to pull the cart, set it on the desk,
top it off, reset the chip and put it right back in the printer.

BTW -- like Tom, I use the SK168 chip resetter. It's very easy and
fast. Also, you asked if the chip needs to be reset when a still-
full cart is removed from the printer. I'm not sure exactly what
you're getting at here, but if you pull a cart and then put it right
back in, the printer remembers the ink level. I'm not sure what
happens if you pull a cart, swap it with another and then put the
original back in at some later date.

I'm very interested to hear how you resolve this issue for yourself.
Please keep us posted.

Thanks,
Peter.

Alan,

As I'm on a mac - I don't know the functioning details
of this program - but it resets the chip without
removing the cartridge.

Thanks a lot Tom,

I'm going to refill for a while and then go to the top-off system. I
need to find out more about how the CIS chips are set to always show
full carts. I have 4oz. bottles of FS and piezotone inks.

Best solution for me is the F-16 from Inksupply
<http://www.inksupply.com/index.cfm?source=html/f16.html>

I use one on my 1270 & 1280

Push a button and your set to go and never touch the cartridge.
