Digital BW, The Print

Hey guys,

My Epson 980 printer has been mis-behaving. First it wouldn't print a 
full sheet before stopping and claiming falsely that it was out of 
ink. Someone suggested that it may be the waste ink tank full 
problem. I should then re-set the printer ROM as described on MIS FAQ 
pages. 

I did this. 

Now the little booger prints BUT with gray (I'm using quad-tone ink) 
bands behind everything. Hmmmm?  For example if I print the nozzle 
check each line has a grey stripe along with a correct check pattern. 

Any ideas?

BTW I opened the waste ink reservoir and pulled out a dozen fiber 
sponge pads. Very interesting - they are about 1/4 x 4 x 6 in. thick 
and soaked to the gunnels with ink. Tubes from the park position 
under the print head lead to the reservoir and pads.
