Peter, I use UT inks and have had few problems with them on glossy papers, they only smudge when I apply alot of pressure!. Wrt the curves producing extreme tones. this may have something to do with a fairly well manipulated image before the curve is applied. Once you have applied the curve (if as a layer flatten the image) and then look at the histogram in levels and see what state the curve is in. If there is a lot of info missing in the left-hand side the computer has to guess what tones should be there, hence the unreal tones. The only way I have cured this posterization is to rescan the image, and make the scan look like I want it to wrt tones, contrast etc and then apply very small curves/levels to make sure the image is in good condition for when the curve is applied.
