Steve,

First, IP can be purchased for $395 from Lexjet. Second, I somewhat disagree with your comments. I would agree that the color print image quality from IP is not phenomenally better than the Epson driver with good profiles and proper color mgmt techniques, but...

In my testing of IP over the past week or so, I found the following:

1. I liked IP's handling of color better than the Epson driver; slightly less warmth and saturation in all colors, and I definitely preferred the color blue (sky, for example) in the IP print. The IP prints seemed to better match my memory of colors in the actual scene. This was my wife's opinion, too, as she was right there for many of the shots. Side-by-side, on the same paper put through the same printer, the Epson print looked ever so slightly garish. Also, I don't know how IP handles whites and near whites, but whispy clouds in my landscapes somehow looked more 3-dimensional and, at the same time, more translucent. Is it possible to make whispy clouds looks more whispy through software?

2. I really liked IP's handling of grayscale images. In natural room light the high values just seemed to glow and "jump out at ya"; similar to BO printing following Clayton's workflow and techniques.

Additionally, I like the fact that I have many, many paper profiles available for quite a few papers that I might like to investigate. Less time playing with the process...more time making images! As my time to devote to photography is limited I enjoy a more "out of the box" solution. I know many have had problems with IP, but I experienced none of the reported issues.

BTW, I used Roy's QuadToneRIP v1.1 some time ago with my Epson 1160. The print quality provided by Roy's software was great, but the Gimp drivers bring new meaning to the word: SLOW!

Just my .02 cents............

Regards,
Alan Huntley
