I agree with you about searching the archive for information. It is commonly recommended to newcomers that they search the archive before asking an often repeated question. Unfortunately, if you type "scanners" into the "Search Archive" box you get back a huge number of posts that are not of much help. We need to find a balance where new people with questions can ask and a simple way to direct them to a source of good info. Either a FAQ sheet on this list or some other site. In the end though I really hate to discourage people who are trying to learn from asking. One solution is to offer them answers off list.
