Re: MF Scanners and film sizes

Re: MF Scanners and film sizes

2003-09-29 by sandersm@aol.com

My thoughts on the two MF threads:

1. As to scanners, I have an Epson 3200 flatbed and a Microtek Artixscan
120tf, and I have used the Polaroid Sprintscan. (No experience with the Nikon,
alas.) The Microtek is a better scanner by far than the Epson, and an
improvement also over the Polaroid. The Microtek and the Polaroid both deliver
much sharper scans than the Epson, and with much better rendition of midtones in
b+w negatives. The Microtek differs from the Polaroid in that it allows
multiple pass scans, resulting in more shadow detail and less noise in the dark
areas.

I shoot mostly with a Rolleiflex, but I also shoot some 4x5 Polaroid 55
negative film and so I'm saving the Epson 3200 to scan it. But for MF and 35mm
negatives, the Microtek wins hands down in my book. I have begun to post
images on the web at www.mcnew.net. If you go to the gallery, "Central Park at
150," the first three images in the gallery (full-framed shots with the rebates)
are Epson 3200 scans, as is the scan of the 4x5 shot in that gallery titled
"Rowboats." The remainder of the images in that gallery were scanned on the
Microtek. (BTW, blunt criticisms of the photos are muchly appreciated.)

2. As to film formats, I'm not sure whether the difference between 645 and
6x7 is meaningful. I've not shot either format -- I shoot mostly 6x6 with a
Rolleiflex. Yes, there is more negative. But it's not that much more --
not nearly the leap from 35mm to MF. I suspect that other variables -- lens
types, and your comfort level with the cameras themselves -- will have a much
bigger effect on your photo than the difference in size between 645 and 6x7.

There is, however, a big payoff in moving from MF to 4x5. The cost of
adding 4x5 to your kit doesn't have to be great. On eBay, it's pretty easy to get
a decent 4x5 press camera for about a hundred bucks. (This summer, I bought
an aluminum Burke & James press camera in great shape with a revolving back
and a 127mm Ektar lens for $82.) Add a Polaroid 545 film holder ($50) and a
couple of boxes of Polaroid 55 film (which gives you an instant b+w negative as
well as an instant print) and you've got yourself a poor man's way to BIG b+w
negatives.

There you have it -- worth every penny you paid for it.

Beginner

2003-12-03 by Ulf Widén

I am a beginner in using digital media in photography. I do have a lot of
B/W-negative from late 60's to now. I have mainly used Tri-X, HP5, FP4 and
Pan F.
Is it possible to get decent prints from scanned negative and which scanner
is recommended for B/W. I also would appreciate a recommendation of printer.
I am totally novice when it comes to digital equipment. It would be very
nice to use a digital darkroom instead of a regular one.

Yes!

>and which >scanner is recommended for B/W.

Best results will come from a film scanner, not a flatbed. You didn't
say what format. For 35mm, 2700 dpi scanners are around $200-300
(Minolta). 4000dpi scanners are around $500 I think (Canon, Nikon).
The newest Minolta 5400dpi is around $750 (I have one of these, it's
great).

For medium format, 4000 dpi scanners start at around $1700 for the
discontinued Nikon 8000, and about $2700 for the latest model.

Take all these prices with a grain of salt. Things change constantly,
but it should give you an idea.

Lots of choices here. I'll leave that to other forum members.

Thanks for your answer. I have both 35mm and medium-format(6x7) and I have
asked for price on such scanner and it was too much for me as a beginner I
think. I have looked at the Minolta 5600 and it looked to be a good choice.
However, a friend of mine recommends Epson 3200 because I could use it for
negative up to 6x9. I am a little skeptic to this. I have heard that
flatbed-scanners are no good for scanning neg/dia. Have anyone comments on
that. It would be very hand if the Epson is usable, but I have no clue.

I have an Epson 2450 and am rather pleased with it. No problems, no
banding, no newton rings that I can see. With a flatbed like this you
won't get the same quality as you would with a film scanner, but for
medium format you get plenty. I use a Minolta Dimage Scan Dual II for
35mm film, and the Epson 2450 for medium format.

If you get an Epson 3200, look into one of these. I plan to order one soon:

I do the same as Conrad. Minolta 5400 for 35mm and Epson flatbed for
120 and 4x5. The flatbed for 35mm is not good enough.

I scan 4"x5" film on a 3200. I'm happy with the results. However, I've tried small film and found the results not acceptable to me.

BTW, if you use the Epson TWAIN 5 software to do your scans try it with
the unsharp mask box unchecked and do the USM in Photoshop. I get
better results that way.

The subject of scanners has been hacked to death here. So why not
read through the database of posts before starting yet another
thread about it.

The subject of scanners has been hacked to death here. So why not
read through the database of posts before starting yet another
thread about it.

This group needs a FAQ. There are number of questions here that gets
asked and answered repeatedly, and you can't really blame people for not
finding everything in the archive - It's not exactly the most convenient
way to find information, especially if you're not even sure exactly what
you're looking for.

Does there exist any software to easily maintain a FAQ online?

2003-12-03 by Roger L Sopher

Hi Ulf,

The group website contains the archives and you can do a search from there.
It is useful to try a search through the old material to help you become
more specific with your questions. Often you will have to winnow through a
lot of "stuff" before finding useful information particularly if the
children have been having flame wars in and about a particular subject.
Also. be aware that this is a rapidly developing craft that is neither a
finished nor an exact science and there is a lot of opinion as well as hard
earned experience involved. Even after going through the archives one may
still not find "the answer."

Don't an occasional curt reply dissuade you from asking questions, it's the
only way to get specific answers if indeed such are available.

Please, no more scanner posts!SV: [Digital BW] Re: Beginner

2003-12-04 by flyfishingusa2002

Ulf and others,
Please do not be put off on asking any question relating to
DigitalBlackandWhite ThePrint here. But there is a very obvious box
at the top of the message index that says "Search Archive". I just
entered "Scanner" and came up with enough information to fill the
British Libary.
I use this search engine on a regular basis to find the answer to
most of my questions. If you can't find the answer you are seeking
here then please post your question, of observation, here and I am
sure you will get much help.
Scanner questions have been beaten to death of late, why anybody
with decent file would try to scan without a drum scanner is beyond
me personally. I tried using a flatbed and a Nikon scanner and gave
up. Digital is the way to go. I am not that good at digital darkroom
processing, but I can produce a very nice B/W using a old Epson 3000
the likes of which I seldom have seen from most of the pro
processing outfits over the years.

Please use the "Search Archive" first.

Sierra Gold

PS if there is anyone out there wanting to visit Yosemite this
winter and would like to walk in Ansel Adams footsteps, so to speak,
please get in touch with me as I am considering hosting a trip there
which might require some snowshoes! I want to capture a "Clearing
Storm"

* This group needs a FAQ. There are number of questions here

* Does there exist any software to easily maintain a FAQ online?

Daniel,

We could easily add FAQ pages on any topic to the Files section if someone
would be so kind to write them up.

I agree with you about searching the archive for information. It is
commonly recommended to newcomers that they search the archive before asking
an often repeated question. Unfortunately, if you type "scanners" into the
"Search Archive" box you get back a huge number of posts that are not of
much help.

We need to find a balance where new people with questions can ask and a
simple way to direct them to a source of good info. Either a FAQ sheet on
this list or some other site. In the end though I really hate to discourage
people who are trying to learn from asking. One solution is to offer them
answers off list.

Thanks for all answers. I will use the archive first in the future before
posting a question. I wasn't aware of it because I only use my email-client
for reading and posting. I only used my web-browser when I was signing up.
For me as a beginner I can see that the search-function is very handy to
look for a specific issue. Thanks for pointing that out. I agree it should
help with a FAQ when signing up. I see that this group is very active and I
hope I can both learn a lot and even contribute to the group with my
knowledge.

Storm"

Ulf,

There is a filmscanners list at filmscanners@... as well as
others on Yahoo. They only discuss filmscanners, so I suggest you post your
questions there.

I am so sorry for my question. I didn't now that there is a database to
search. As I am a beginner to this I haven't follow the postings. Please,
apology for my posts. Maybe it's best for me to be silence, as I don't want
to offend anyone.

I second that. I am very happy with my 2450 that I use mostly to scan
6x6. I'll probably upgrade to the 4870 when it comes out next year.

Cheers,

Manu

Guys,

I strongly disagree RE the Epson3200. It does a very good job on film
particularly with negs. See my out-dated review here:
http://www.panoramacamera.us/m_2450test.html

but more important, look at links to newer reviews of 3200 on my page.

The good news is the 3200 should be very cheap soon because the dear folks
at Epson are coming out with a new 4600 (?) after the first of the year. I
haven't even taken the protective film off my year-old 3200!! Now, they
can't keep doing this every year can they?

I always use the excellent SilverFast software bundled with the
scanner. It is my understanding that it is better to do as many
adjustments as possible at the time of the scan - post PS - to benefit from
the higher bit mode (is this the correct term?) of the scanner as well as
the "native" scanner algorithms. Subtracting the number of bits "wasted"
in processing leaves plenty left over for post-processing. It should be
pointed out that the flat bed's fluorescent lamp is similar in over-all
effect to using a cold-light enlarger lamp.

Ulf,

Pay no attention - if everyone just read the archives there wouldn't be many
posts. :-)
Just remember to trim the non-text portions of your reply.

Having previously search the archive, doing so is not very productive.
You get way too many messages back when searching basic topics. Like
was previously mentioned, this group needs a FAQ.

Please, no more scanner posts!SV: [Digital BW] Re: Beginner

2003-12-08 by jsinger986

A while ago I started a B&W film scanning group. Funny thing, when I did that some
people here didn't like that idea because they wanted scanning questions posted in
this group. You can't make everyone happy.

The scanning group is here:

Jeff,

If you are starting from film, scanning is a critical part of making a
quality B&W digital print. Discussions of scanning and how it relates to
printing have always been and always will be welcome on this list.

This may not be the view of all the members but that's the "official"
policy.

However, scanning is a very large topic and one worthy of lists of its own.
I subscribe to

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ScanHi-End/

Which is a great resource of scanning info directed toward high end drum and
flatbed scanners.

Of more general interest to people starting out is the great site on
scanning:

http://www.scantips.com/

If you do some searching on the web you will find a number of forums
dedicated to a particular brand or model of scanner.
