Jeff,

If you are starting from film, scanning is a critical part of making a
quality B&W digital print. Discussions of scanning and how it relates to
printing have always been and always will be welcome on this list.

This may not be the view of all the members but that's the "official"
policy.

However, scanning is a very large topic and one worthy of lists of its own.
I subscribe to

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ScanHi-End/

Which is a great resource of scanning info directed toward high end drum and
flatbed scanners.

Of more general interest to people starting out is the great site on
scanning:

http://www.scantips.com/

If you do some searching on the web you will find a number of forums
dedicated to a particular brand or model of scanner.

* A while ago I started a B&W film scanning group.  Funny
* thing, when I did that some
* people here didn't like that idea because they wanted
* scanning questions posted in
* this group. You can't make everyone happy.
