Consider a 1280 with MIS UT inks (in carts) and use Paul Roark's workflow & curves. I realize it's not one of your two alternatives, and I'm not sure why. That combo produces exceptional prints, is about as simple as it gets, and is also about the lowest cost way way to go. I use a CFS and love it, but they are more complex than carts. I'm not aware of any problems they solve other than lowering ink costs long term and greater ink options.
