In case someone in the future has the same problem and comes here 
seeking a solution...

I'll answer my own question.

Yes. If you wait a couple days, air in the sponge or the ink chamber 
will "work itself out."

At least, it did for me. I waited 2 more days before trying a nozzle 
check again.. and voila.. it worked.
