refilling UT-2 in my 1280 air problems

refilling UT-2 in my 1280 air problems

2004-02-03 by Mike Sommers

This weekend I tried refilling my UT-2 cartridges for the first time
(they came already filled, I subsequently bought the 4 oz bottles and
the syringes).

My first comment is that I made a big mess. I underestimated how far the
ink would squirt out of the top vent if I overfilled (which I did on 4
out of 5 tries). Both of my hands were covered in black ink when it was
all said and done, but it washed off with soap and water.

It took me 2 sets of cleaning cycles of 3 cleanings each to get clean
nozzle checks. I'm still having trouble getting a good nozzle check out
of the "light magenta" position (after 36 hours of "rest"). I'm pretty
sure it's caused by air in the ink chamber.

If I wait long enough, will this problem go away (ie, will the air work
its way out)? or should I just pop out the cartridge and try refilling
again (after extracting the ink and foam out of the cartridge first).

Thanks,

Mike

In case someone in the future has the same problem and comes here
seeking a solution...

I'll answer my own question.

Yes. If you wait a couple days, air in the sponge or the ink chamber
will "work itself out."

At least, it did for me. I waited 2 more days before trying a nozzle
check again.. and voila.. it worked.

Microbands & Green Cast with 1280 & UT

2004-06-15 by Keith Hollister

I have recently developed a couple of problems with my 1280 loaded with
MIS UT carts. The first issue is a very noticeable green cast. I have
triple checked my workflow as well as nozzle checks to no avail. I
decied to try a black-only to see if the Eboni ink looked right - the
color was OK (warm but free of other colors), but I have microbands
except in the first 1/2 inch of the print. After the first 1/2 inch is
printed the banding starts. This is not visible in a color (greys)
print. I have tried alignment and cleaning, but no luck.

Ideas?

Keith, have you tried swapping carts to either Epson OEM or the MIS $5
dye carts? That will isolate your problem to output/driver/printer or
carts/ink. If carts/ink just ask MIS to swap them out. If
output/driver/printer then try a standard, no adjustment needed, file
to narrow it down to output/driver/printer.

Just follow a simplistic diagnostic process to isolate the problem. I
bet the solution will be obvious once you know the true problem.

Also look on the tech support section of the MIS website. The answer
to almost every question is there. It's just time consuming to find it.

Hi Keith,

I think Paul may be correct in asking you if you haven't printed
anything for a while. You most likely have to run one or two cleaning
cycles even if you got good nozzle checks the first time, then print
a half or full page of a purge pattern, then print the nozzle check
again, and maybe one more clean cycle.

I always print a pattern to make sure all nozzles are firing before
starting my print jobs.

After a few iterations of the nozzle cleaning dance, I have what appear
(even under 2X magnification) to be perfect check patterns, However, I
still get microbands in BO printing. What's really odd is that the
first 3-5% of the image is perfect, then the banding starts. Moreover,
the good part of the image is a fixed percentage of the total image
size, NOT a fixed number of pixels or inches (on a 5x7 it is about
1/2", on a 3x5 it's about half that). In a full color print there is no
banding apparent to the naked eye, but it is faint;y visible under 2x
mag. I've tried OEM carts also. Now for the even stranger part - there
is no banding visible in the black stripe when I print the MIS purge
pattern, even on EEM with 1440 DPI!

I believe the green cast is a bad cart because the light blue toner ink
is more cyan than I remember when I print the purge pattern.

Any ideas? It almost seems like a driver problem, but the only thing
different is a newer version of OS X (10.3.4 versus 10.3.2? when I last
printed with this printer).

Keith,

Did you go back to MIS for a new cartridge? The green shift is a problem
that has shown up on my 7500 when it is not used for more than a month, but
yours is the first case I've heard of with a desktop printer. It's non-use
of the printer that seems to cause this. I just loaded a new beta UT1 toner
in my 7500 and hope that it'll take care of the problem.

At any rate, go to MIS and get a new cartridge. Using the printer at least
every few days should avoid the problem.

Paul

I had another new, sealed cartridge which I put in - now I have a faint
magenta cast. It would appear that these inks do not have much of a
shelf life. I'll call MIS next week and see what they want to do. I
guess I'll try the UT2 stuff this time. Any advantage to using QuadTone
RIP over the Epson driver with UT2?

Paul,

On one hand I'm happy that I'm not the only one but it looks like
it happens much faster and less predictable.

Wednesday I got that green shift of the light toner for the first
time in my 9000 but it has been idle for longer periods before
and this time it was less than 4 days.

Is this pigment settling ? I'm not so sure, looks more like they
used two pigment hues and the magenta degrades in the mix. One
would expect a single hue pigment for a toner that has to last.

Paul,

I had this problem for a while earlier this spring with the UT inkset
on an Epson 1160. In desperation, I kinda shook all the bottles of
the inkset and the problem went away.

Andre

Exactly. I agitate bottles regularly. When I used a CIS with an 1160 and
Piezo inks, I agitated the bottles occasionally. With a 4000 on a table
next to my desk, I may go with a CFS in part to be able to agitate easily
and at will.

Is it possible that the inks separated in the carts when idle for the longer
period and you had been using ink in the lines that was not separated for a
period?

When the ink is agitated, it returns to its former hue, from what I can
tell. So, this seems to indicate to me that it is probably a settling
problem.

In desktop units, the head agitates the mix regularly. So, the problem does
not seen to exist for most users. The sponges may also be a factor. My
7500 seems to agitate the pigments enough due to the stand rocking slightly.
(You'd once mentioned this, I thought at least in part as a joke. However,
I think you were right on, as usual.)

The beta toner I'm testing in my 7500 uses the R800 clone "blue" pigment.
This is part of the Ultra Tone family of inks. While it is on the magenta
side of my target, it allows me to move considerably closer to a
single-color toner. I have to use a bit of cyan, but cyan has always been
rock solid. The pigments seem to be well matched in their physical
characteristics. So, I'm waiting for the end of the month to see how the
fade test looks. Also, of course, the ink is sitting in the 7500, and I'll
let it sit idle for long while.

Note that pigments are often mixed. I don't think the mixing is necessarily
a negative, as long as the characteristics of the pigments are appropriately
matched.

I'm using my own CIS system that has 500 ml bottles with a direct
connection to the internal inklines. The total length of the
lines isn't more than with carts. But when I observed it I
checked the bottle to see whether settling had occured and
couldn't see it. Neither with the 1.5 pint content in two bottles
for filling. I will pull the ink out the line and see whether it
gets back to normal. Normally (with Generations yellow for
example) you can see the pigment settling at the bottom of the
bottle.

I will take more care to keep them suspended. I had the
impression that the Ultratone / Ultrachrome inks suffer less of
that problem.
