Solux 12V halogens on a track. Pretty cheap. They come in two color temps
and three beam widths. I use the 5000K ones, although I found I had to boost
the line voltage up to about 130V in order to get them up to that temp with
the fixtures I bought (as measured with an Eye-One). Fortunately, I had an
old variac lying around gathering dust.

No perfect answer, but at least incandescents (e.g., halogens) have smooth
spectra that won't introduce any eccentricities of their own. Fortunately,
B&W is much more forgiving of illumination variations.
