Softproofing mono with EyeOne Match- additional

2004-04-30 by Tyler Boley

This is a slight add-on to the excellent work Carl and Roy did working
out how to make Match work with custom charts, and providing files etc..
I make a lot of carefully considered tonal decisions about what
precisely happens in very near black, below 95%. It's been a bit of
trial and error to get precisely what I want on paper even with
softproofing, perhaps part of it is my monitor.
Anyway, I thought the soft proof might indicate more acurately how
those areas will print if the profile had more sample points in those
areas. After starting to simply add a few to Roy's larger chart, I
finally threw in the towel and simply made one with all 256 levels, it
was actually easier.
It does indeed let me predict a bit better how those slight
transitions will print, slightly. I doubt if many will need this, and
it probably seems like overkill, but it is still far fewer patches to
read then your average color chart.
This also brings into focus the issue of monitor profiling. I've used
three different apps, all with hardware, two even sharing the same
hardware, and they all profile the monitor a bit differently. I guess
it's naive to think that here, again, there is some standard to
calibrate to, very frustrating.
Anyway, if anyone is interested, I have the chart and reference file
and can have Martin upload them to the list if desired.
