Softproofing mono with EyeOne Match- additional

Softproofing mono with EyeOne Match- additional

2004-04-30 by Tyler Boley

This is a slight add-on to the excellent work Carl and Roy did working
out how to make Match work with custom charts, and providing files etc..
I make a lot of carefully considered tonal decisions about what
precisely happens in very near black, below 95%. It's been a bit of
trial and error to get precisely what I want on paper even with
softproofing, perhaps part of it is my monitor.
Anyway, I thought the soft proof might indicate more acurately how
those areas will print if the profile had more sample points in those
areas. After starting to simply add a few to Roy's larger chart, I
finally threw in the towel and simply made one with all 256 levels, it
was actually easier.
It does indeed let me predict a bit better how those slight
transitions will print, slightly. I doubt if many will need this, and
it probably seems like overkill, but it is still far fewer patches to
read then your average color chart.
This also brings into focus the issue of monitor profiling. I've used
three different apps, all with hardware, two even sharing the same
hardware, and they all profile the monitor a bit differently. I guess
it's naive to think that here, again, there is some standard to
calibrate to, very frustrating.
Anyway, if anyone is interested, I have the chart and reference file
and can have Martin upload them to the list if desired.

I must have missed that thread. Can you point me to it?

Monitors are a lot more well-behaved than printers. If you're seeing
significant differences, my guess would be that the black points aren't the
same. As far as I can see, Eye-One Match doesn't let you set the black point
at all, and I don't know what it forces it to be. OptiCal at least lets you
set the black point, and I think there's some virtue in not setting it as
low as a blank screen, to better match the density range of a print.

Good explanation, particularly as none of the three apps I have let me
set it, and who knows what they are having me calibrate to.
Thanks,

Hi Paul,

We came up with a way to use the Eye-One with i1Match to create
grayscale softproofs for any gray output method. The results
are much better matching of screen vs print.

See my website QuadToneRIP > Softproofing
There's a write up and a few files.

Is there anyway to use this profiling on a PC without using QTR? In
addition, is there anyway to allow the proofing instructions for use
on an Eye-One to be downloaded to a PC?

Thanks

Gareth

The proofing files and instructions are in stuffit format .sit
I think there's a free uncompress program for PC on stuffit.com

If this turns out to be more of a hassle, would .zip files be the
best format for PC's?

probably .zip files for PCs - but for Macs - stuffit appears to be
standard - and is very well integrated with panther...

Stuffit PC version works fine, I often recieve and deliver files to and from
Mac's,
So I would think most PC users would want a program to unzip Mac formated
files.
