RE: [Digital BW] Picture Windows opinion

2004-05-15 by Paul Roark

Randy,

Between the Pro and cheaper Picture Window (PW) program, the big difference
that I'm aware of is that the Pro version is 16 bit, the cheaper one is 8
bit.

The main reasons I PW as an alternative to PS is that it can use the curves
I use to control the inksets, and it is also a small competitor as opposed
to an Adobe or Microsoft.

I think the "best" program is usually the one that you're most familiar
with. That is, with the learning curves being what they are, it's hard to
make a good comparison between two good programs that is not simply a
reflection of how well you know the particular programs.

That said, I prefer Photoshop. However, with my workflow, the way PW opens
successive windows as you do things facilitates my use of the clone tool to
paint in just the amount of the affect I want. PW aligns the clone tool at
the corners of the frames very easily -- virtually automatically. With PS I
can use the History tool to do the same thing, but it takes a few more
keystrokes and is less intuitive.

PW does not use layers. This is a minor inconvenience for me, but could be
a major problem for those who do composite images. I'm not an expert in PW,
so maybe there are good ways to do the same things in different ways.

What really irks me about PS now is the new licensing scheme that would make
me buy multiple full-price copies to have copies on a laptop and secondary
PC. Because of this and the higher compatibility of the curves, I now use
PS 6 the most. I like PS CS/8 16 bit layers (never liked PS 7), but I only
use PS 8 when I need those 16 bit layers. If I had to live with only one
image editor, it would be PS 6.

Subject: [Digital BW] Picture Windows opinion

Please, only comment on the Picture Window Program if you have at
least downloaded it and used it on more than one occasion.

I want some opinions on "Picutre Window" from those of you that have
used the professional version of PhotoShop (not Elements) for a
while and understand its controls relatively well and have
given "Picture Windows" a fair shot. Hint: If you only used it on
one occasion or on someone elses compture; please don't comment. I
realize that this may tie many of your hands, but, I have found that
most that continually blast products, other than their favorite
products are usually narrow minded and don't know what the "H..."
their talking about.

Also, if you know, please explain the difference between Picture
Window and Picture Window Pro; they don't explain on their website.

From what I have read and have heard from some is that it sounds
like a good program that can be a lot simplier than the full blown
version of PhotoShop, but with a lot of control that you lose in
Photoshop Elements.

Thanks
Randy
