I have experience with the 860 and the C84 - so my comments should apply. My first quadtone experience was an epson 860 with the piezography driver. Due to piezo manufacturing problems, I switched to the MIS FS inkset and was quite pleased with the results. I still believe that the 1160/860 printers with the R9 driver give excellent results. I did have an epson 1280 that ran both the Piezo and UT2 inks as well as printing black only - but I prefer the look of the 1160/860 Piezo prints above the other solutions. The c84 and the MIS EZ black and white are an excellent combination. However, the output is quite different than that of your piezography printer. The best explanation of the prints is that they are a superior version of black only prints from a 1280. This being said because the print is very smooth, but you can detect a certain level of dots within the highlights (at very close range). The prints are extremely smooth, and the color is very pleasing. I am using the original black cartridge from Epson, I imagine as soon as I switch to Eboni the prints will still be excellent. Personally I believe that the 860/R9 is a better combination because of the highlights. However, to the C84's benefit the prints exactly match what's on my screen. It took a few test prints, but I am printing WYSIWYG. This is one of the difficulties with the Piezography/R9 Driver. Due to the advanced age of the 860, I would print with that until it goes. The C84 can be purchased new for 79 dollars (after rebate) and the CMY EZBW inks are only 32.85 plus shipping (if you use the supplied Epson black cartridge). That's a grand total of 112.00 plus shipping for quadtone printing. I can't think of an easier or more cost effective method of black and white printing (except for black only, but that technically is not quadtone). As the c84 is a bare bones printer, I do get more banding than with the higher priced models - but for the price it can't be beat.
