The low dmax you are seeing suggests that you might be using a profile that specifies PK ink for black, instead of MK. Eboni is in the LK ink slot in the MIS UT inkset and MIS PK is in the K ink slot. If you can post the contents of the curve descriptor file you are using we might be able to help. You should be getting a dmax on HPR with Eboni in the 1.6+ range. Also, try using the BOOST function to increase dmax (eg. BOOST_LK=95).
