No it is not too thick but you need to load it manually via the rear feeder.

Look in the 2200 instruction manual, page 17, it tells you how to manually feed thick paper.

No No Ellis , you have the right printer . Just feed it through the back. Belive me Epson listened to us years ago when we screamed that the 1270-1280 type printers made our life hell because of the thickness issue. They have SOLVED this one. You can even print on foam cor and very thick non-coated media on the 2200. Read your manual. You have the perfect printer for up to 13x19. --- BRIAN ELLIS <campy72@...> wrote: > Look in the 2200 instruction manual, page 17, it > tells you how to manually feed thick paper. > ----- Original Message ----- > From: stridulent<mailto:aethereal@...> > To: > DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@yahoogroups.com<mailto:DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@yahoogroups.com> > > Sent: Wednesday, July 14, 2004 10:24 PM > Subject: [Digital BW] epson 2200 > > > i purchased an epson 2200 and have been trying to > print with > hahnemuhle photo rag...is it too thick for the > printer? is there > another similar paper that is not too thick for > use in the 2200? > > > > > Please visit the Group Homepage to check the > Files, and other resources as they are often being > updated. > > > http://groups.yahoo.com/group/DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint<http://groups.yahoo.com/group/DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint> > > If you wish to receive no emails or just a daily > digest, or you wish to unsubscribe, please edit your > Membership preferences by visiting this same page. > > Please follow these basic guidelines: > - As threads develop, trim off excess portions of > earlier messages to keep them short. > - Good manners are required at all time. To anyone with experience with QTR on a Mac Epson 2200 UT inkset (not UT7) I have been having lots of problems getting setup some of them based upon the fact that MIS sent me mis-filled ink carts. Some tech issues getting CUPS to work on my computer with Panther. So, everything seems to be installed and working, but the prints are way off from what I am used to seeing with Piezography. I am using the UT-MK curves. The blacks are very weak (1.31) I am trying to follow the documentation to do a calibration but it seems to have several inconsistencies: 1) The documentation says to use the pattern test page "inkpattern.psd" but there is no such file included in the installer. The documentation says that the file is a cmyk file. I found a file called inkseparation.psd and inkseparation.tif but these are both RGB files. I tried to print them anyway but the prints were missing lots of patches and contained no text. I just downloaded the old beta 8 installer and sure enough the file is there, I will try it with that. 2) What is meant by the line " QuadTone RIP Curves is whatever curve set you want to split up into separate inks?" Any help getting through this would be GREATLY appreciated. My 1160 with Piezo is not working and I keep getting the blue selenium problem. I am on a MAJOR deadline to get some prints out the door for a customer by Friday. Thanks in advance. James Haney

James Roy will probably chime in but let me see if I can help you a bit. The file you want to use is called inkseparation.psd and is an RGB file. When you print it make sure that you are using a curve which has the setting CALIBRATION=YES. This produces a curve with a calib suffix. You also must go to Printer Features in the driver and then Quadtone RIP Settings and select Quadtone RIP Calibration. I am not sure about your second question but the basic process here is to choose which inks are going to be partitioned to create a gray scale (eg your black, light black etc). The first step is determine ink limits which essentially are percentages at which point you say I have enough ink for good paper coverage (on the 2200 these are normally quite high). Ink Separation.psd is printed to determine this phase and then again with the ink limits set. Then you do the partitioning by essentially looking to see at what density the 100 patch of the next lightest ink kicks in at. For example, if patch 100 of light black (being the position where your next lightest ink is placed) has a density between that of the 55 and 60 of black then the GRAY_INK_2=LK, GRAY_VAL_2=57 (by interpolation). QTR then takes all this info and calculates a curve (Calibration now = NO ie it is only set to yes when you are printing Ink Separation.psd). The final step is to linearize this info by printing a 21 step wedge and following the instructions if you have an Eye-One. You can get a visual impression of what the final curve looks like by running Graph-Curve and dragging the .quad curve into the terminal window and hitting return. Steve

It is important to NOT colour manage the INK SEPARATION.PSD file (this is what Roy meant by saying it is a CMYK file).

It is a CMYK file when you open it. An older version of QTR used an RGB file. You can't use that on Panther. Be sure you have the latest version beta9 I think, and only that loaded. Contact me off list. > I tried to print them anyway but the prints were missing lots of > patches and contained no text. > > I just downloaded the old beta 8 installer and sure enough the file is > there, I will try it with that. That file is not compatible. Also be sure that you have the Calibration=YES and that you choose Quadtone RIP Calibration under Quadtone Rip Settings under Printer Features when you print this file. The colors on the file are not what is important here, each bit means something different to the QTR driver when printing in calibration mode. Costa

Steve, That is the single most helpful overview of the process I have read so far. Thanks for the input. I basically figured most of that out this morning at about 2:30AM. I don't know what printer/ink/paper combo you are using but after all of that I seem to be finding that the UT inkset is incapable of anything over 1.34 density. This is contrary to what I have read on-line but I tried a number of curves and calibration files and cannot seem to get beyond that. Just so I am not missing something obvious, or inheriting ink limits built into someone else's ink descriptors, do you have an ink descriptor file that when printed should yield the maximum density on a 2200 printer? The low dmax you are seeing suggests that you might be using a profile that specifies PK ink for black, instead of MK. Eboni is in the LK ink slot in the MIS UT inkset and MIS PK is in the K ink slot. If you can post the contents of the curve descriptor file you are using we might be able to help. You should be getting a dmax on HPR with Eboni in the 1.6+ range. Also, try using the BOOST function to increase dmax (eg. BOOST_LK=95).

I made one mistake in saying that the psd file was RBG. It is CMYK but don= 't colour manage and your PS mode is still Adobe RGB. I am using MIS UC inks ie colour with Eboni in the black slot. I use "two"= blacks which are partitioned to achieve a gray scale. For warm these are K and LK. For Coo= l I use QTR's UC_NEUTRALIZER=YES function to blend LK, LM, and LC to create a cooler LK i= f you will and then partition this with K. For HPR my Limit_K is 90 and Boost is set = to 95 if that helps. You must be able to get much greater dMax. My understanding is that UT K i= s Eboni or near enough at least in terms of dMax. So your target should be around 1.6= 5. Print the Ink Separation file in Calibration mode with all the ink limits s= et to 100. By in Calibration Mode I mean CALIBRATION=YES, select the .calib file in the QTR = driver settings and use QUADTONE RIP CALIBRATION. This prints the file, a line for each in= k, at full throttle ie the 100 step is maximum for that ink. You should see that the = dMax of K is around 1.65ish. But if you were to print with each ink at full throttle th= en you would fload the paper so follow Roy's step 2 instructions and set the ink limit for eac= h ink. The 2200 can handle quite high numbers here...80-90. (A guide for Boost is 10 point= s above Limit K.) Having set the ink limits, print the Ink Separation file again in Calib mod= e (this is the last time you use the calib curve in the driver) and measure your 100 steps to s= et the partioning. --- In DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@yahoogroups.com, James Haney <jhaney@m.= ..> wrote:

Don¹t forget to Run Quad Profile after each edit of the Ink Descriptor files. And close and reopen Photoshop so that the new curve is picked up. BTW why do my posts get all these = signs when I return carriage when responding via the website (as opposed to from my mail programme)? IS there something I should be doing differently?

Thanks for all of the input everyone. I have learned a ton in the last 24 hours. Unfortunately, most of it at about 2 AM. For the record, according to Roy, the file to use for beta 9 on Panther is the RGB file "inkseparation.psd" I do, in fact, have the Eboni in the LK position and am using that. However, I remember that I applied the BOOST to the K position which is unused in my current profile. I will try again with the BOOST applied to LK. Anyone else have this problem. I am making a matte profile so the K position is unused. apparently this is the ink used for all of the text in the calibration file, so my scales all print out without any numbers. I have to count patches to figure things out. I tried re-enabling the K channel but got an error saying an ink can only be defined once. I know I could figure the syntax out but didn't want to waste any brain cycles last night (this morning). I will post the ink descriptor tonight and hopefully I can tap into your collective wisdom further. Onward!!!! James Haney

Roy, I don't have the documentation in front of me but how do I define an ink position (LK) as Gray_1. Roy can correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that LK is defined as GRAY_INK_1=LK as shown in the sample profile below. If you wanted to use this profile you would first have to calibrate to get the correct ink limits for your set up and paper and then linearize. # # quadtone curve descriptor file # # # the printer name # the curve name # no spaces or special characters, except - or _ (dash or underscore) # PRINTER=QUAD2200 CURVE_NAME=2200-UT-MK_warm CALIBRATION=NO GRAPH_CURVE=NO # # number of inks must be 4, 6, or 7 # the ink limits are percentages # usually they are all the same but they can be individually set # N_OF_INKS=7 DEFAULT_INK_LIMIT=80 LIMIT_K=0 BOOST=95 LIMIT_C=70 LIMIT_M=0 LIMIT_Y=70 LIMIT_LC=70 LIMIT_LM=0 LIMIT_LK= # # Describe Usage of each Ink: K,C,M,Y,LC,LM,LK # All Inks of Printer must be listed # # # Gray Partition Information # use ink names: K,C,M,Y,LC,LM,LK # N_OF_GRAY_PARTS=4 GRAY_INK_1=LK GRAY_VAL_1=100 GRAY_INK_2=C GRAY_VAL_2=51 GRAY_INK_3=LC GRAY_VAL_3=30 GRAY_INK_4=Y GRAY_VAL_4=12 GRAY_INK_5= GRAY_VAL_5= GRAY_INK_6= GRAY_VAL_6= GRAY_INK_7= GRAY_VAL_7= GRAY_HIGHLIGHT=4 GRAY_SHADOW=8 GRAY_OVERLAP=10 GRAY_GAMMA=1 GRAY_CURVE= # # Toner Partition Information # N_OF_TONER_PARTS=0 TONER_INK_1= TONER_VAL_1= TONER_INK_2= TONER_VAL_2= TONER_HIGHLIGHT=1 TONER_SHADOW=0.01 TONER_GAMMA=1 TONER_CURVE= # # Unused Inks # N_OF_UNUSED=3 UNUSED_INK_1=M UNUSED_INK_2=K UNUSED_INK_3=LM UNUSED_INK_4= # # the following is a special UltraChrome ink flag # it copies the light-black curves to the light-cyan and light-magenta inks. # this insures that the LC and LM inks are used to directly neutralize # the color of the light-black. # the color balance of inks is controlled by the LIMIT_... values above. # UC_NEUTRALIZER=NO

Carl, I tried to use the descriptor just as you provided it and I get a lot of the symptoms I previously mentioned. Hello, I am new to the list and am looking to get the Epson 2200. The one thing holding me back is wondering if it is due to be replaced. Something introduced over two yrs ago is getting on the "old" side. Any comments here please. Dan [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

Thanks, the 4000 is out of my price range, unless I have a wind fall of print sales. How much is the new one, I can't read the language. thank you again Dan

So what if there is a replacement for the 2200? It'll still work as well as it did before. I'm of the opinion that you do not want to buy a new model printer. I want one of those with developed tried and true workflows so I can make good prints, and do so easily. I don't want to be one of those who spend time on the leading edge trying to learn how to get a new model printer to make prints as good as the previous model that has been figured out already. I watched people spend a year learning how to make a 2200 make prints that look as good as a 1280. And while they are both mature models now, the prints still look the same from both. There appears to be no impending breakthroughs that will cause the 2200 replacement to make any better prints. FWIW, I recently bought a new printer after printing b&w for several years. Did I worry about the 2200 replacement? NO, in fact I didn't even buy a 2200. I bought another 1280 which appears to be at the end of it's life cycle. It prints as good as anything out there but is cheaper, simpler, and I know how to make it work. Epson wants you to believe you must have the lastest and greatest printer. That's good for them. But if you just want to make great prints, and do so easily, buy one of the older models. Dan You neglected to tell us how you intend to use it. The 2200 is incapable of making decent black and white prints on its own, unless you plan to do black-only printing. If you intend to use the full inkset of the 2200 you'll need to buy a RIP. If you intend to use a 3rd-party inkset then you can buy a much cheaper 1270 or 1280.

Paul: I'm curious about the red and blue ink to widen the gamut. Are we talking black and white here or color? Sorry, my naked eye can't tell the difference in the 1280 and 2200 dot size. But then Peter Nelson once said I must have bad eyesight. Bob Michaels --- In DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@yahoogroups.com, "Paul D. DeRocco" <pderocco@i...> wrote:

This has no effect on B&W, but some of us print color, too. As to dot size, I believe the 1280 and 2200 are 4pl, but the R800 and new 5000 printer are 1.5pl. In theory, the smaller the dots, the closer together they can be placed for a given darkness, meaning less grain and sharper detail. However, using stock color inks, this may not mean less visible dots, because they're using the smaller dot size to allow them to drop the light versions of C, M and K inks. If someone comes out with a B&W inkset for the new printers, the smaller dot size could render sharper detail, although I think even the 1280 and 2200 reach the limit of what my eyes can discern, too. So I think the main benefit of the newer printers is for color printing. -- Ciao, Paul D. DeRocco Paul mailto:pderocco@...

That is a good question, I started looking for a printer once I purchased a digital camera and started thinking about color printing. ALMOST as soon I was all fired up to print black and white since that is what I have done in the darkroom, and is my first choice. The 1280 has recently been reduced in price, which did catch my eye. I am unfamiliar with RIP. thanks

Just to add one - yes, the R/B carts are for color printing (and they are great), but the other improvement is the "gloss optimizer" (the "eighth color") which helps in B&W and color equally, if you're into the whole glossy thing. I know some folks here spray/seal their own prints, and that's always a good thing, but to get great glossies without the whole floating on the surface effect, the GO cart works great. - R

I am unfamiliar with RIP. thanks A RIP (raster image processor) is a standalone program (formerly a standalone box) that directly controls the printer, so doesn't rely upon the standard Epson printer driver for generating the dot patterns. If you use the Epson driver, it's almost impossible to get perfectly neutral B&W prints on the 2200, with no color casts at certain gray levels (unless you print with black ink only, which is grainy). With a RIP like ImagePrint, you can get excellent neutral B&W prints using the color inks, because it does a better job of balancing the colors than the Epson driver, but at a cost of $500. There are other alternatives, much discussed in the archives, like QuadTone RIP (QTR). -- Ciao, Paul D. DeRocco Paul mailto:pderocco@...

Bob yours is a valid argument, this will be my first serious printer, so I have a learning curve regardless of what I buy. The rapid changes has been one real argument for waiting.......I merely wish to buy as smart as I can the first time.

I own a 2200, and although i think it prints beautifully in color, with black and white you really need to test and test and although you can get a very nice print in the warm and cool ranges, i have found, and would love suggestions, that getting a rich, tonal neutral print is almost impossible. The papers you are using make a huge difference, as do many other factors. I would consider what it is you want to print most and look for what printer has the most in that capacity. Newest is always one way to go, but not always best for your specific needs. good luck! Paul I still believe the 2200 will be able to make better B&W prints than the new printer, just because it has the light black ink.

QTRGui forces me to use two curves (won't let me not use a curve) and I can't seem to get a good result - either too cool or too warm. I've tried a number of combinations including the obvious 50% cool and 50% warm but still not happy. Can anyone assist? (Epson 2100, Epson UC inks, MK, Epson archival matte A4 S041342) Thanks Robert

The beauty of the ImagePrint RIP is that you can use your printer for B&W and color... no switching in-and-out of inks. No need for a dedicated printed for both B&W and color. --- In DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@yahoogroups.com, Hans Van Rafelghem <hvr@a...> wrote:

You use 1 curve by setting the blend to 100% to use just the left curve (curve 1) or 0% to use just the right curve (curve 2). As to getting a tone you like, you just have to experiment. I'm happy with the 50% blend of EMM_2200-cool and EMM_2200-coolSe on Enhanced Matte paper. -Stephen www.sbillard.org/Stephen

There are limits to the extent of cool or warm tones that QTR allows, if your preferences are outside those settings, it won't satisfy you. But it sounds like that isn't your problem and that you must simply experiment as Stephen Billard says, bracketting the warm/cool boundaries of your preferred tone. I suggest that you also try some of the curves for papers other than the one you are using, if it is in the list, as there may be enough difference to get you where you prefer to be in the tone range. Since I'm using papers that aren't profiled in QTR, I have had to find my own tone blending options and it has been without problems. Frank

Yes, but what do you do when you want to print something that is mostly monochrome, but with splashes of colour? This is the gap, but I've been reluctant to shell out for IP just for this. Does IP reduce the metamerism of colour prints? (Sorry, I know that this is a B&W list, but there are a lot of RIP users here). I print monochrome with spashes of color often using ImagePrint. I use an RGB image of course that has been partially or largely decolorized using layers, channel mixer etc. Then I just print using settings that I would for a color print. I get acceptable results. --- In DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@yahoogroups.com, "ferdinand_paris" <ferdinand_paris@y...> wrote: > > Yes, but what do you do when you want to print something that is > mostly monochrome, but with splashes of colour? I had assumed that Imageprint would be able to do this. My question was, for those of us using the Epson driver for colour, and QTR(Gui) for B&W, is a RIP like ImagePrint the only easy and reliable way of doing this? You said "acceptable results". Is this different to "good" results? F_P --- In DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@yahoogroups.com, "digikdm" <monroekd@h...> wrote:

iProof PowerRIP will let you print combinations of color and BW. http://www.iproofsystems.com/powerrip_2000_epson.htm This little known RIP was the first I used to get neutral BW without metamerism from my 2100. It doesn't have a separate BW printing mode, but it seems to do the right thing and use mostly grayscale inks when it encounters grayscale values in RGB images. Some people here tried it and found the dithering too coarse, while others liked it. It is slow because it requires you to use 2880dpi printing mode to get acceptable results. I also found that the dmax with this RIP was lower than with the Epson driver. I've since moved on to the UT7 inkset using both the Epson drivers and QTR. They have a free demo on their site which is fully functional, but will put a watermark on your prints: http://www.iproofsystems.com/download/powerrip_2000_epson.htm -- Daniel Staver http://daniel.staver.no

For straight B&W I generally use the MIS EZW on a cheap C84 which produces a nice warm carbon tone that I like. QTR is an excellent product ... it is just that the MIS CFS is so much cheaper than replacing those expensive cartridges. Jonathan

That's the one with no Light Black? If so then not quite a replacement if B&W if important. Have t osee how that one does with B&W..... Richard

I realize there are probably more high end/large format printers (people, not machines) on here, but for those interested, Fry's has refurbed C84's on sale for $39.99 after rebate. Add $40 worth of MIS cartridges and you have a great B&W performer for under $100 for 8.5x11 and under prints. Excellent for someone like me adding inkjet monochrome printing to your tools. Ed

The metamerism in the B&W component of an RGB file with splashes of color printed with ImagePrint is no more than the metamerism in the pure B&W prints which is minimal. I find that there is essentially no metamerism with IP if I use a daylight profile and view it in sunlight. The same print viewed under tungsten light exhibits slight metamerism. cheers!! --- In DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@yahoogroups.com, "ferdinand_paris" <ferdinand_paris@y...> wrote: > > I had assumed that Imageprint would be able to do this. Richard, It's smaller brother, the R800, has been around for months now and has plenty of reviews such as - http://www.outbackphoto.com/printinginsights/pi029/Epson_R800.html which discusses B&W printing using the Higloss Ultrachromes. Have t osee how that one does with B&W.....

Thanks for the offer, but a few words of reassurance are probably adequate at this stage. Regards F_P --- In DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@yahoogroups.com, "digikdm" <monroekd@h...> wrote:

I bought a used 2200 on eBay for $250. It was clogged pretty badly so I invested in the MIS cleaning cartridges and spent some time getting it running. I then switched it over to Jon Cone's K7 ink set and use it as a dedicated B&W. I am very happy with the results. I would not try to use a 2200 to print B&W using the standard Epson inks. I print colour and BW exhibition prints using the 2100/2200 and both I and my clients are pleased with the results. With QTR, very good BW results can be achieved, esp with matte papers. With lustre papers you have to use spray to get rid of bronzing. To start with I'd suggest using the OEM inks with QTR. I've tried MIS inks, but the clogs made it too much hard work. I use it with MIS UT3D inks, I drive it with QTR and I'm happy with the results. Is it the best possible printer to start with anno 2008? I'm not sure. The 2400 gives good results out of the box with Epson inks. The reputation (I've not seen results myself yet) of the new 1400 is also quite good. It depends on 1) price 2) your willingnes to tinker with other inks and software. If I would set up my 2100 from scratch I would probably go for Paul Roark's 4K+ inkset, accepting that I need a RIP like QTR to drive it. Joost
