Epson has the C84 "color" inks "under-print" the black ink even in the 100%
patch with most of the papers except "Plain Paper."  Maybe this is the
difference between the paper types that you're seeing.   

The C84 I had was fine with "Plain Paper," but at the price they are
charging, I suspect they sell even the ones that might not be up what we'd
expect from a more expensive machine.   

I wonder if the units they effectively gave away were the same quality as
the others?  Since there appears to be a C86 (?) now (I have no information
on it), they may have just been blowing out the inventory.

Yes, I too had problems with visible banding in dark areas of my 
prints on EEM (or it might have been Matte Paper Heavyweight, I 
don't remember) when using the "plain paper" setting.  When I 
changed to the Matte Heavyweight setting the banding disappeared.  
(I didn't change the recommended contrast or brightness settings.)
