c84 and mis ez driver setup

2004-07-24 by kiakki

i have a question regarding the set up of contrast and brightnes...

on the website (mis) it says the following

In Paul's latest comments on the C84 he recommends using the following...

For Matte Papers - Use Best Photo, Color Controls On, Plain Paper,
Contrast -15, Brightness -5

For Epson Glossy Photo Paper - Use Best Photo, Color Controls On,
Glossy Photo Paper, Contrast -10

are we taking +15 contrast or -15 (minus) and the same question about brightness

TIA

I just set up a C84 with the EZ inks, and the numbers Paul suggests are
MINUS numbers on both brightness and contrast sliders. Personally, I
thought my prints on EAM looked better at -10 contrast, but that's
subjective.

I also found that I got visible banding in the very dark sections of images
(95-100% black areas) when using these settings with EAM, which disappeared
when I changed settings to Matte Heavyweight, High Speed and -0- brightness
and contrast. Anybody else notice this banding on their setups when using
Paul's recommended settings?

Cheers,
Kip

Yes, I too had problems with visible banding in dark areas of my
prints on EEM (or it might have been Matte Paper Heavyweight, I
don't remember) when using the "plain paper" setting. When I
changed to the Matte Heavyweight setting the banding disappeared.
(I didn't change the recommended contrast or brightness settings.)

Epson has the C84 "color" inks "under-print" the black ink even in the 100%
patch with most of the papers except "Plain Paper." Maybe this is the
difference between the paper types that you're seeing.

The C84 I had was fine with "Plain Paper," but at the price they are
charging, I suspect they sell even the ones that might not be up what we'd
expect from a more expensive machine.

I wonder if the units they effectively gave away were the same quality as
the others? Since there appears to be a C86 (?) now (I have no information
on it), they may have just been blowing out the inventory.

Epson C86 no difference Re: c84 and mis ez driver setup

2004-07-26 by Angela Silva

FWIW, I gathered the following info for another group - I called
Epson USA and spoke with "John" in tech support who said he
didn't know of any difference between the two models either
except for the look/design. The printing speed, the Durabrite
inks, the picoliter/droplet size, the paper sizes, the paper feeder -
all the same. I asked about the ink cartridges and whether they
were anything different, they're even the same cartridge SKUs.

Even their PR agency in San Jose confirmed the same info - the
only thing new is a "New Photo Kit" - "New with the EPSON
Stylus C66 and C86, customers will receive a photo kit for easy
and convenient photo printing and crafting. Included with both
printers are 20 sheets of photo paper, Epson Software(R) Film
Factory(TM) for easy photo storage, printing and organization, as
well as a free membership to Epson's exclusive photo craft and
photo sharing Web sites, giving customers all the resources
needed to start printing at home."

Don't even bother asking why they do this... Just buy the Epson
C84 and use the rebates with confidence, unless you absolutely
have to join the exclusive Epson photo craft and photo sharing
Web site! Those rebates won't last long, thru September, as the
"new" model is out...
