I think it is usually best to uninstall and reinstall both, since the status monitor is responsible for a lot of the communication that goes on. If you are installing from the original CD, it usually installs both automatically, but if you are installing from a separate downloaded driver file, you need both files - the driver file and the status monitor file. If you uninstall the 'Epson Printer Software' in Add/Remove programs' it uninstalls both I think. Anyhow, it's another possibility eliminated.
