Did you change paper ?
It seems to me like the printer is not driving the paper correctly, rollers ? motor ? It is mechanical not software nor connection.

I normally print B&W on a 7600. The PC (win2k) communicates to it over
Ethernet. But I've got a tiny bit of color work to do, so I borrowed a
2200 printer. My only choices for connecting to it are parallel or USB,
so naturally I picked on USB.

I spent a couple of days getting it installed, what with OS upgrades
(win2k, fully patched), loading the driver from the Epson website, doing
the funny little dance if you have a certain "hot fix" patch installed,
etc. But, I got it to work. It's been printing fine for a couple of weeks.

Today it printed fine too, for a while. Then I switched images. When I
tried to print this image, the first time it got half way through and
quit. No errors. Nothing in the event log. It left no clues. Second try,
same thing. It got about half an inch farther along this time.

I played with the USB cable (plug and unplug), rebooted the printer and
the computer. Now when I try to print from Photoshop, I get a
"communication error" pop-up. Still nothing in any of the logs to give
me a clue as to what is actually wrong.

Finally, I deleted the printer and did a reinstall of the printer
  driver. Same symptom.

I've run through all my ideas. Would any of you 2000 / windows / USB
users please tell me what you think could be causing this?

This happened on my 2200 when one of the ink cartridges was low (not about
to be depleted, just low enough to get the message that says the supply is
below 20%).

Re: [Digital BW] 2200 USB "communication error"

2004-09-23 by Bob Frost

Hogarth,

The usual two things that are suggested for this type of problem, are:-

1 have you defragged your hard drive to which the printer spool files are
copied?

2 have you tried reinstalling the driver?

You've done 2, but have you done 1?

I had a most peculiar problem recently, a friend had an image that wouldn't
completely print, so I was asked to have a look. I did 1 and 2 above - no
change. I spent ages trying various things, but to no avail. Finally I
cropped about 1/4" off the edge of the image (all round). It printed! It
wasn't just the size, because reducing the whole image by 1/4" didn't cure
it. Any ideas on that one would be appreciated.

Nope. Paper is the same - Hahnemuhle Photo Rag 188gsm.

I get the "communication error" pop up before the printer even attempts
to grap the paper. It appears to pop up immediately when the spooler
starts sending print file data.

Hogarth,

I forgot - did you reinstall the Epson Status monitor as well as the driver?
Or only the driver?

Just the driver. Does it need the status monitor reinstalled too?

Just defragged. No change.

Can one bypass the spooler and send the file from Photoshop to the
printer directly? Would it matter if one could?

Re: [Digital BW] 2200 USB "communication error"

2004-09-23 by Bob Frost

I think it is usually best to uninstall and reinstall both, since the status
monitor is responsible for a lot of the communication that goes on. If you
are installing from the original CD, it usually installs both automatically,
but if you are installing from a separate downloaded driver file, you need
both files - the driver file and the status monitor file.

If you uninstall the 'Epson Printer Software' in Add/Remove programs' it
uninstalls both I think.

Anyhow, it's another possibility eliminated.

Bob Frost.

Yes - go to your Settings/Printer/Properties/Advanced and there you have the
option of selecting Print direct to printer or Spooling. There is also
another option further down labelled Advanced Properties. I seem to remember
some people curing problems by unchecking this. If you use the help
question mark on it, you will see that it gives you options such as booklet
printing, but does say that turning it off might cure some 'compatibility'
problems.

Perhaps obvious ... but have you tried swapping in another USB cable? Then
go into the Windows printer manager, and try to do a test page.

Bob, I think you're the "winner" in that when I reinstalled the status
monitor, I lost the "communications error" pop-up, and it printed to
completion. Either that, or bypassing the spooler worked. Yeah, I know,
changing two things at once is a no-no, but it's late, and I'm tired.
I'll reinstate the spooler tomorrow and see what happens.

But I think it was the status monitor. Very peculiar problem.

I should point out, as if anyone cares, that I've never had this problem
with a RIP. But then, the RIP people are about selling RIPs, while Epson
is really about selling paper and inks. Shouldn't surprise us that their
software is of questionable quality, and yet it does....

Thanks to everyone for their help.

Hogarth,

Glad you solved it; I seem to remember that the driver has to be installed
first, and then when the status monitor is installed it looks for a driver
to monitor. Why it sometimes loses communication is anyone's guess, it
seems!

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
