I had a similar problem with a 1280, but I have no idea whether its relevant to your printer. There's a cylindrical brass bushing in the print head housing which slides along the horizontal shaft. In my printer, the bushing came out of the plastic housing and blocked the print head from moving all the way to the left. I took it to an Epson repairman who pushed the bushing back into the housing, after which it worked. He tried to glue it to the housing, but this didn't work, and I had to push it back in when the problem recurred.
