I have a similar problem when trying to use the curves using OSX and PS 
CS.  the dark tones get all bunched up through about 90% on a 
grayscale, and there's a single midgray tone from there to about 25%.  
I followed these instructions to the letter..

and couldn't figure out what I did wrong.  so.. I've been using QTR 
which works great for me.
I'd love to make the curves work though, to see how they compare to QTR.
