RE: [Digital BW] Ilford Gallerie Papers-Revisited

2001-12-04 by David J. Bookbinder

Maris,

Ilford Galerie Classic Pearl paper is similar to Epson ColorLife paper. It
is designed to encapsulate dye inks so they don't fade. Ilford Galerie
Smooth Pearl and Galerie Smooth Gloss papers are both quick-dry papers.

They also make a paper called Printasia, which appears to be a replacement
for their Heavyweight Glossy paper and is intended for dye-based printers.
It seems to use a third type of emulsion, a compromise between quick-drying
and long-life. The paper stock is thinner than the Galerie papers, about the
same weight as Epson Photo Paper. It is quite glossy on one side, close to
matte on the other, and printable on both sides.

I'm not sure what Ilford was talking about because my box of paper is called
"Ilford Classic Pearl", meaning both words are part of the name. I know
there is also an Ilford Smooth Gloss that I'm just about to try out.

Another difference might be that I'm using Epson C80 OEM ink while you are
sing piezo so I'll duck out now as I know this is the BW list.

| Maris,
| Here's what Ilford emailed me when I first inquired about the papers:
| "Thank you for your email regarding the new ILFORD Galeire inkjet
| media. First let me explain that the Classic and the Pearl types are
| two different technologies of inkjet. The Classic is designed for use
| with dye based inks providing ultimate stability indoors and good
| performance with the majority of desktop inkjet printers. It is not a
| fast drying media. Also this media does not suffer from the so called
| `gas fade` issue.
| The Smooth range is designed for high speed printing with piezo
| printers also offering pigment compatibility. It is of the so
| called 'instant dry' type. Like ALL media of this type with dye based
| inks it can suffer from 'gas fade' It will have a shorter life with
| dye based inks and should be displayed protected for long life. With
| pigment inks it does not need to be protected and will last more
| than 30 years with this ink type."
| With your encouragement I have just tried the Classic with MIS FS
| inks. There is some bronzing in the dark areas, but I've seen
| worse. I'll let it dry overnight before trying a smudge test.
|
| Julian,
| So far I have avoided sprays. Did you use the Ultima with the Ilford
| Smooth Pearl?
|
| Thanks, Hap
