Digital BW, The Print

I have a Nikon Supercoolscan 8000, and have been frustrated with the
included software.  I recently purchased Vuescan which seems much
better, but now my frustration is with the lack of documentation and
support for Vuescan.  Perhaps some kind soul on this site can help? 
My question has to do with the meaning of the settings for black and white
negatives - there are multiple settings for both TMax and TriX films
which appear to relate to the contrast.  Since experimenting with each
of these settings as a means to learn what they are is tedious at
best, and perhaps unproductive, I am hopeful that someone can help me
with advice or point me to a relevant resource.

Note - I use FP4+ at EI 64, developed in Rodinol, and TriX EI 400,
1600, & 3200, and am looking for a good developer at this point.
