Vuescan settings

Vuescan settings

2005-05-19 by Bob Smith

I have a Nikon Supercoolscan 8000, and have been frustrated with the
included software. I recently purchased Vuescan which seems much
better, but now my frustration is with the lack of documentation and
support for Vuescan. Perhaps some kind soul on this site can help?
My question has to do with the meaning of the settings for black and white
negatives - there are multiple settings for both TMax and TriX films
which appear to relate to the contrast. Since experimenting with each
of these settings as a means to learn what they are is tedious at
best, and perhaps unproductive, I am hopeful that someone can help me
with advice or point me to a relevant resource.

Note - I use FP4+ at EI 64, developed in Rodinol, and TriX EI 400,
1600, & 3200, and am looking for a good developer at this point.

Thanks,
Bob

There's a fellow named Ernst Dinka, who uses Vuescan in his printing
business. He's pretty knowledgable about the software and has answered
a lot of questions about the software.
He generally posts on the Yahoo 4870 group

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/epson4870/

You might try posting the question there, it's a pretty liberal group
with many questions about scanners other than the Epson family.

I have also printed off the manual, it takes a little bit of reading but
well worth it in the long run. I use vuescan with a Nikon 5000, works really
well scanning various b/w film.

Bob,

There are a few scanning workflows using Viewscan that might help you
go through the routine of scanning and help you understand how it
works. Then later on you may develop you own scanning workflow.

Of course, a scanning workflow that works for someone may not be
suitable for the next person. Just in case, here's two of them.

The Shutterbug link didn't work for me though I'd guess it's to David
Brooks' scanning article which I remember from a year or so ago and that was
pretty good. Zuber is good too. However, the best resource I've found
dealing specifically with using Vuescan can be found at
http://homepage.mac.com/onelucent/VS/vsm.html. That's an article by David
Stein titled "Working With Some Newer Features of Vuescan." Vuescan has
changed a good bit since the article was written so some of the windows
today don't look exactly like they're shown in the article but it's still a
helpful guide to using many of the Vuescan settings.

Re: Vuescan settings

There's also a Yahoo Vuescan Group and a Yahoo wet scanning group
(called Scanmax) and a Yahoo Nikon group for the 5000, whose members
are often really 9000/8000 users. They (we..I use a V) all have
similar realities re: Vuescan Vs Nikonscan.

You should also browse through photo.net's digital darkroom group as
there are some genuine expert types there...browse with 9000 and
8000 and Vuescan and V and 5000.

As for "tedium," I'm afraid that's the name of the game.

I'm using Delta 400 and Rodinal 1:50 myself. Nice grain, if that's
your cup of tea :-)

Re: [Digital BW] Re: Vuescan settings

2005-05-20 by Scott McLoughlin

I'm an HP5+ shooter, but I find HC-110 works very well with
this and other 400 speed films, including Tri-X and Neopan 400.

The economy and keeping properties are very gook like Rodinal, and
the dilutions/agitation alchemy resembles Rodinal modus operandi
as well.

I've been using dilution H (1:63) @ 68F with just 1 inversion every
2 minute with good results at EI 320 and 800.

For pushing to 1600 and 3200, Photo.net has lots of good info on
pushing Tri-X using HC-110 using higher dilutions and semi-stand
development. The B&W Film & Processing forum folks on PN
are extremely nice and knowledgable.

For FP4+, I've used HC-110 (B) and Rodinal 1:50 with good results,
but for some odd reason couldn't get a good result out of (H). Lately,
I've been (lazily) experimenting with FP4+ and Delta 100 in Acutol.
So far FP4+ in Acutol seems easily as sharp as Rodinal with slightly
less prominent grain. The main documented benefit of Acutol vs.
Rodinal is better film speed, but I haven't personally done any side-
by-side comparisons.

There's no Tri-X selection possible in the B&W film choices.
It doesn't matter much what you take but I use Tmax + a choice of the
Tmax development list..
I have gathered my information mainly from the helpfiles while working
with it, quite good I have to say.
I could send you my saved option for 35mm B&W but it isn't very special.

Thank you for your reply. Your name was mentioned as an informed,
helpful person. As for TriX, I confused that with D-76 - my mistake.
Is it true that if I am producing a raw image, that the B&W film
setting is inoperative? Leaving all the adjustments to Photoshop is
fine with me.
