Which is the way to go for output of best B&W prints? Final aim is to have stunning 11x14
gallery prints from scanned 4x5 negs. Was thinking of buying used 2200 and the UT7 inks
and using the quadrip, but maybe i should wait for the 2400. Any input would be
appreciated.

I would wait if you can and listen to more feedback on the 2400. You won't
have to wait long. If the new Epson inks live up to the hype re gloss
differential and bronzing (ie significant improvement) you will likely want
to stay with them until there is a clone of at least similar quality so that
you can explore both matte and photo paper without frustration. Even if
the Epson driver doesn't live up to expectations, if the new inks do then
the 2400 will still be worthwhile because not long after it is supported by
Gimp Roy Harrington will likely have it up and running for QTR. In short,
it's all about the inks. If the inks don't pass muster then the 2200 is
fine with alternate inks.

I was thinking the same thing. I figure it is about time to upgrade
my Epson 1160 that I use for B&W. The advantage of the 2400 over the
2200 is a slightly finer ink droplet (3.5 vs. 4.0 pl) and 8 inks
instead of 7. for that matter you could also consider the R1800 which
differs from the R2400 primarily in terms of the inks (and drivers for
those inks) that it uses (the print drivers in the R1800 allow ink
droplets as fine as 1.5 picoliters) The R2400 has one possibly useful
advantage over the R1800 it can front load very thick papers where the
R1800 is set up to only load CD's at the front. I will sat that that
the R1800 produces outstanding color prints, if that is an potentia
ladvantage for you. The R2400 is $300 more than the R1800, and $250
more than the current price for the 2200. Features and price -- pick
what's important to you and pay the man.
