Mark,
I can only speak for my 4800 - I get ABW when either the MK (matte) or
PK (glossy) carts are loaded.  So it might be a config problem - but
who knows?  I must say I'd have been p'd off if after buying I'd found
I was limited to ABW with PK glossy only.

By the way, the ABW mode does use small amounts of colour inks - but
it does so to give you whatever flavour of neutral you want.
