E-mail is great when no emotion is involved. Sometimes, however, it just inflames. I'd go to the gym, get out my anger, then get on the phone and simply ask, "What ever happened to my order ... something must have gone VERY wrong?". Another opening line that often works for me in customer service situations is, "I've got a problem, and I hope you can help". Remember, the person answering the phone did not create the problem. Also, most businesses don't want to ignore customers -- although that may be what they've ended up doing.
