As far as I can tell Apple did this for 2 main reasons:
1.  They always said they wouldn't prevent people from running Windows on Intel Macs.  I 
think they felt it was better to give people a clean way to do this than allow some ungodly 
hacks to be the only way.
2.  Those people who were thinking of switching to Macs but want to also run Windows 
apps now don't have that as an excuse (they may have other excuses but not that one).

Frankly, unless someone has Windows only apps there is NO overwhelming reason I can 
see to put it on a Intel Mac.  And those people who don't think there's a difference 
between OS X and Windows (which depends on Apple's innovation to provide ideas for 
their OS) should just stick with a Windows machine.

That's my take.
