Guys are doing it now with a more complicated hack. James

Thanks for that link. I might just be running Studio Print before it's all over with. You know Apple is smart, they might as well join them and act like it was all their idea. With the new machines they aren't going to stop it anyway. Apparently this windows situation doesn't require the dual core chip. I know a guy who is already running XP on the new Apple laptop. Now when the new version of Windows comes out that is supposed to look a lot more like OSX, it will be an interesting world out there. John

It's starting to feel like what is the point for two different operating systems in the future. Windows XPOSX? Mark

The release made it clear that Apple has no plans to load Windows software on a Mac. They have released software that will allow you to install your copy of Windows XP on a Mac running on an Intel chip. Furthermore, the two operating systems can only be run sequentially: you have to choose one or the other at startup and then reboot to switch. Still, a major step. I think Jobs is more interested in the music and video side of things, that digitally is taking off like a rocket. There is a lot of money in that stuff as the IPOD and video pods have shown them. Oh, yea Steve and Disney, big money there, much more than OSX. They can design a super fine laptop though, charge three times more for it and let those who want exoticism pay for it. There will always be that high-end market, for what it is. john --- In DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@yahoogroups.com, Mark Savoia <mark@...> wrote:

They didn't have any choice, people were already hacking into it. john

Right. There are only a couple of apps that are Windows only that I'd like to have. Unfortunately, while one of them could run on any $299 Windows box, the other one couldn't- it's a music app that would require a high quality machine. While I'd have to buy a MacIntel, I'll wind up buying one eventually anyway, and this way I don't have to buy an additional pricey computer. I think it's a really cool step forward. Better than something like Virtual PC which I considered in the past but rejected for the more computing intensive apps. James

They always said they wouldn't prevent people from running Windows on Intel Macs. I think they felt it was better to give people a clean way to do this than allow some ungodly hacks to be the only way. 2. Those people who were thinking of switching to Macs but want to also run Windows apps now don't have that as an excuse (they may have other excuses but not that one). Frankly, unless someone has Windows only apps there is NO overwhelming reason I can see to put it on a Intel Mac. And those people who don't think there's a difference between OS X and Windows (which depends on Apple's innovation to provide ideas for their OS) should just stick with a Windows machine. That's my take. Angelo

This is even more interesting: "Parallels released their Windows virtualization solution for the Intel Mac today. The product is called Parallels Workstation 2.1 Beta and a free fully functional copy is available for download now. Unlike Apple's Boot Camp solution which was released yesterday, Parallels solution allows you to run Windows XP (and other Intel-based operating systems) from within Mac OS X. Rebooting or Dual Booting is not required. This allows users to maintain their daily environment while also being able to use any desired Windows applications. It is only available for the Intel Macs and should provide near-native performance. Parallels Workstation 2.1 Beta for Mac OS X is NOT simply a "dual-boot" solution; rather, it empowers users the ability to use Windows, Linux and any other operating system at the same time as Mac OS X, enabling users to enjoy the comfort of their Mac OS X desktop while still being able to use critical applications from other OSes. Parallels appears to be taking advantage of the Intel Virtualization Technology which was included in the Intel Yonah processors that are now shipping in the Intel Macs. While in free Beta testing at the moment, the final software package for Linux and Windows is priced from the company at $49.99."
