If I was custom mixing a set of 3 black inks, I would probably set the light and medium a bit higher, like 65 to 75 for LLK and 50 for LK. That would give you better control in the highlights, to fill in the mid tones just overlap the LK and K a little bit longer. Yes it would give you more ink on the paper with this method, but if you aren't dealing with full color this shouldn't be much of an issue. But this is just the way I would probably do it.
