Is there a way to reset the suicide counter and let the little beast >soldier on until the output really does start to fall in quality? The Russian utilities can probably reset the counter. Do a Google for it. My C86 continued for a long time after I reset it. >2. Barring that, is there a current Epson model that takes the same >cartridges, so that I might not have to replace the whole CIS unit >(which cost a LOT more than the printer itself)? The C88 will do that, I believe. The cart type changed after the C82. The C88 works reasonably well with the C86 settings, etc. that I have at http://home1.gte.net/res09aij/C86-EZ-UT-Readme.htm For a little preview of other C88 results, see http://home1.gte.net/res09aij/C88_EZ_CSR_SPECTRO.pdf Paul www.PaulRoark.com
