I wouldn't use the premade filters. But, I have a different approach than Paul. I do ALL of the processing for the b&w images in RAW mode. In my case, that means Nikon NX for processing the NEF files. Maybe the next version of PS will have RAW conversion that matches NX for quality. But, at this point, NX provides a superior RAW converter. Unfortunately, Nikon's support SUCKS.

I don't have any experience with this plug-in, but, frankly, I'm not sure
I'd ever use one of these types of programs.
What I do with digital images is simply work in Photoshop and split the
channels (see the upper right arrow on the Channels palette). This allows
me to look at the information in each channel, and clone into a working
grayscale file the best of it from each of the channels. Since the image is
the same, it's easy to align the clone tool on the upper left corner,
looking at the (x, y) coordinates on information palette. I prefer the
control this approach gives. Photoshop can do it all.
