Jules, Some developers stain emulsion selectively, which does with certain images sometimes increase shadow detail. As well, stain tends to conceal grain without dissolving it. Almost exclusively relevant to "scenic" photography (not commonly of interest to people who use fast film), it has less to do with "image" and more to do with "print."
