Thanks for the correction Ernst; I didn't look closely enough to see if I'd punctured the cross-piece (it's a bit hard to see in there) or simply pushed it out of its track and jammed the backflow valve ( a small bit of poetic justice in my view) open with it. It works, and its fairly easy to do with the right tool-I used a jeweller's screwdriver sharpened to a point.
